Built from open data
Epic Flight Simulator: Slop Edition (Toronto Fly-Over Demo) is built from open data and permissively licensed tools. This page lists each third-party source, its licence and the attribution that licence requires.
1. Data in the game
The world is generated by the game's open-data pipeline (Tools/pipeline) into these files:
Content/FlightData/world.bin: terrain grid, building footprints and heights, trees and elevated roads.Content/FlightData/world.json: runways, landmarks, spawn points, tour gates and attribution.Data/Textures/T_Ground.png(imported as/Game/EFS/Textures/T_Ground): the stylised ground map and night-light mask, rendered from the same data.
1.1 OpenStreetMap: Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0
© OpenStreetMap contributors
Contains information from OpenStreetMap, which is made available here under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. openstreetmap.org/copyright
- Licence: opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/
- Obtained in one of two ways: from the Overpass API (overpass-api.de and the community mirrors maps.mail.ru, overpass.private.coffee and overpass.kumi.systems); or from the BBBike.org "Toronto" extract, a regional cut of the OpenStreetMap database that BBBike.org redistributes under the same ODbL 1.0 terms. The shipped
world.jsonrecords which source a build used (stats.osmSource). When the extract is used, the line "OpenStreetMap extract: BBBike.org Toronto (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0)" is added to itsattribution. - Used for: water bodies and the Lake Ontario shoreline, parks, forests and land use, roads, railways, runways and taxiways, bridges and elevated roads, trees, building tags and landmark names.
Derivative database and share-alike. world.bin and world.json combine OpenStreetMap data with the other sources below. They are therefore a Derivative Database of OpenStreetMap (ODbL §4.4). The rendered city, the ground texture, screenshots (including those on this website) and the game itself are Produced Works (ODbL §4.3).
In line with ODbL §4.4 and §4.6:
- The Derivative Database (
Content/FlightData/world.binandworld.json) is offered under the Open Database License 1.0. It is distributed in machine-readable form with the project source. - The full method used to create it is distributed with the project under the MIT License: the pipeline source code in
Tools/pipelineand the file format specification inDocs/CONTRACT.md. Anyone can regenerate or change the database. - No technical measures restrict access to it. The format is documented and unencrypted. In a packaged build it is stored in the game's pak file, and the same files are in the project source.
If you only have a packaged build and want the derivative database, get it from the project source (Content/FlightData/) or regenerate it with python Tools/pipeline/build_world.py.
1.2 City of Toronto 3D Massing: Open Government Licence – Toronto
Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Toronto.
- Dataset: "3D Massing", City of Toronto Open Data Portal, 2025 shapefile release (WGS84).
- Licence: open.toronto.ca/open-data-license/
- Used for: building footprints and heights. The data was simplified, merged with OpenStreetMap attributes and re-encoded. It is not an official City of Toronto product, and its use does not imply endorsement by the City of Toronto.
1.3 Elevation: Mapzen / AWS Terrain Tiles (Tilezen "Terrarium")
- Dataset: Terrain Tiles on AWS, originally compiled by Mapzen and now maintained by the Linux Foundation's Tilezen project.
- The tiles combine several elevation sources. These are the attributions required by the Tilezen attribution list for the sources that cover this demo's region (Toronto and the nearby shore of Lake Ontario):
- Canada: "Canada terrain data contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada." (Canadian Digital Elevation Model, CDEM, © Natural Resources Canada; Open Government Licence – Canada)
- Global and United States: "United States 3DEP (formerly NED) and global GMTED2010 and SRTM terrain data courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey." (SRTM, GMTED2010 and 3DEP are public domain.)
- Global: "Global ETOPO1 terrain data U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration." (ETOPO1: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI, public domain.)
- Mapzen: compiled and hosted as Mapzen Terrain Tiles.
- Used for: the 30 m terrain grid. Lake areas were flattened below the Lake Ontario level and the shorelines were reshaped.
1.4 Combined attribution (as stored in world.json and shown in game)

2. Unreal Engine
This game is built with Unreal Engine 5.7 by Epic Games, Inc., under the Unreal Engine End User License Agreement.
Unreal Engine is source-available. It is not open source in the OSI sense. Its EULA allows commercial use. This free-to-play demo owes no royalties, because royalties apply only to a product's gross revenue above the threshold set in the EULA.
Unreal® is a trademark or registered trademark of Epic Games, Inc. in the United States of America and elsewhere.
Unreal® Engine, Copyright 1998–2026, Epic Games, Inc. All rights reserved.
Engine content used at runtime is distributed as part of Unreal Engine under its own terms: the basic shapes, the sky and volumetric-cloud materials, and the engine fonts used by the HUD (Roboto, Apache License 2.0). The third-party components bundled with the engine are listed in the engine installation.
3. Build-time tools (not shipped in the game)
These are used only to build the data or the game. None of them is distributed with it.

4. Original work
All procedural geometry (buildings, CN Tower, aircraft, trees, roads), shaders, synthesised sounds and HUD graphics are generated by the game's own code and are covered by the MIT License. No third-party art assets, models, sounds or fonts are included apart from those listed above.
This website's screenshots are captures of the game and contain the data credited above. The website is set in Barlow, Barlow Condensed and JetBrains Mono, served by Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
